    Choose a busy mall, café or a police station car park. Go in daylight and bring a friend if you can.

    Check the IMEI or serial number

    Dial *#06# on a phone to see its IMEI and make sure it matches the box. For laptops, compare the serial number on the device with the receipt or box.

    Never pay before inspecting

    Do not send a deposit or transfer money in advance. Test the item first: screen, camera, battery, buttons and charging.

    Make sure it's unlocked

    Ask the seller to sign out of iCloud or Google in front of you and reset the device.

    Trust your instincts

    If the price looks too good or the seller rushes you, walk away and report the listing.
